About this course

The BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) is a four-year initial teacher education degree that qualifies graduates to teach Grades R to 3. It is an NQF level 7 qualification of 500 credits (SAQA ID 118320), taught full-time at the Pretoria and Paarl campuses.

It suits caring, patient people who want to teach young children to read, write and count, and to support their overall development.

What you study:

- Year 1: education theory, general pedagogy, academic skills, and content in Afrikaans, English, Mathematics and Life Skills, with classroom observation.
- Year 2: more education theory, inclusive education, teaching strategies and assessment, deeper subject content and peer teaching.
- Year 3: philosophy and history of education, teaching methods for Afrikaans Home Language, English First Additional Language, Mathematics and Life Skills, early childhood education, and work-integrated learning in schools.
- Year 4: reflection on professional practice, advanced teaching methods, education policy, Sepedi conversational skills and extended work-integrated learning.

Teaching practice runs through all four years. Students start by observing lessons, then practise teaching and finally present lessons on their own in real classrooms.

Graduates can register with SACE as teachers and later study further through the BEdHons (Curriculum Studies).

Possible careers

Foundation phase (Grade R to 3) teacher in public or independent schools, or work in early learning centres and education support. Further study includes the BEdHons (Curriculum Studies).

Course intelligence for BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching)

Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.

Not on the scarce-skills list

Job market outlook

BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.

Unlikely to be NSFAS-funded

NSFAS funding

NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like Akademia. Ask Akademia directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.

Akademia’s intake and this course’s requirements at an admission score of APS 30+ generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.

These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with Akademia and NSFAS.
