About this course
The BTh Honours is a one-year postgraduate degree at NQF level 8 (120 credits) for BTh graduates who want to sharpen their skills in biblical exegesis and theology and learn to do independent research. It is accredited by the Council on Higher Education.
The programme is blended. It opens with a two-week intensive contact session on the Kalk Bay campus at the start of the academic year, after which students work remotely for the rest of the year. It can be completed in one year full-time or over two years part-time, which makes it workable for pastors already in ministry.
Structure:
- Coursework (80 credits): Old Testament Theology and New Testament, plus two electives chosen from Pastoral Counselling and Ministry, Ethics, Missions and Church History (16 credits each)
- Research (40 credits): Research Methodology, Research Proposal, Specialist Reading and a compulsory mini-dissertation on a topic of your choice
The strong research focus is meant to train critical reflection and prepare graduates for a master's degree. It suits pastors, lecturers, Bible teachers and ministry leaders who want deeper theological training.
Possible careers
Senior pastor, theological lecturer or tutor, Bible teacher, ministry trainer or researcher. It leads to master's study in theology.
Course intelligence for Bachelor of Theology Honours
Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.
Job market outlook
Bachelor of Theology Honours doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.
NSFAS funding
NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like BISA. Ask BISA directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.
Admission chances
BISA’s intake and this course’s requirements with its published admission requirements generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.
These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with BISA and NSFAS.
