About this course

The CTBS Bachelor of Theology (BTh) is a four-year, 480-credit degree registered at NQF Level 8 (SAQA ID 62150). It is one of only a few theology degrees in South Africa that exit at the level of an honours degree, so graduates can apply directly for a related master's degree.

The degree has more than 30 modules across the main areas of theological training:
- Biblical studies: introductions to the Old and New Testaments, exegesis and New Testament Greek
- Systematic theology: Christian doctrine, including Christology and ecclesiology
- Church history
- Practical theology: homiletics (preaching), biblical counselling, church administration, missions, and youth and children's work
- Christian leadership
- Research methods, leading to a dissertation

Compared with the Bachelor of Ministry, the BTh puts more weight on the biblical languages, starting with Greek in the first year, and includes a module in ecotheology.

Classes are contact-based, sometimes supported by technology. Full-time students take up to five modules a semester. Part-time students attend on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 18:00 to 22:00, which suits people who work during the day. Credit may be granted for earlier accredited theology studies or through RPL.

Course intelligence for Bachelor of Theology

Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.

Not on the scarce-skills list

Job market outlook

Bachelor of Theology doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list as a Missionary. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.

Unlikely to be NSFAS-funded

NSFAS funding

NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like CTBS. Ask CTBS directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.

More accessible

Admission chances

Admission competitiveness meter for Bachelor of Theology at CTBS: More accessibleAccessibleModerateCompetitiveVery competitive

CTBS’s intake and this course’s requirements with its published admission requirements generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.

These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with CTBS and NSFAS.
