About this course

This six-month programme gives beginners a broad first look at the hospitality industry. It leads to a City & Guilds Level 1 award in Introduction to the Hospitality Industry (7107-23). It is not registered with SAQA and is not credit-bearing on the NQF.

It suits people aged 18 or older with Grade 9 who are interested in hospitality but are not yet sure which area to follow. Learners choose one of three streams:

- Guest Service: front office and housekeeping basics
- Food and Beverage: food preparation, beverage service, menu knowledge and setting up for dining
- Conference and Events: helping to prepare and run events

All streams cover how the industry works and the basics of customer service, and each includes structured work-integrated learning so learners gain real workplace experience.

The course runs full-time with intakes in February and July at all seven campuses. Fees include uniform items, digital materials, a social media workshop and access to the Talent Exchange employment programme.

Afterwards learners can take a job at entry level or continue to Capsicum's Professional Chef, Food and Beverage Service or Conferencing and Events programmes.

Possible careers

Entry-level work in guest services, food and beverage or events at hotels, restaurants, resorts and venues, with further study towards chef, service or events qualifications.

Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.

Not on the scarce-skills list

Job market outlook

City & Guilds Learning Programme in Introduction to the Hospitality Industry doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.

Unlikely to be NSFAS-funded

NSFAS funding

NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like Capsicum. Ask Capsicum directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.

Capsicum’s intake and this course’s requirements with its published admission requirements generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.

These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with Capsicum and NSFAS.
