About this course
The IIE BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching is a professional teaching degree that prepares you to teach Grades R to 3. It is offered at Ruimsig Johannesburg and six other Emeris campuses, and online. It is a 480-credit NQF Level 7 qualification (SAQA ID 96408, code BEF0701) over four years full-time, with a February intake, and is designed to meet DHET's minimum requirements for teacher education.
You learn to teach the three Foundation Phase subjects (Language, Mathematics and Life Skills) along with child development, psychology for educators, inclusive education and educational theory. Life Skills covers art, movement, science, technology, social sciences, physical education, drama, music and wellbeing. You also study English and a first additional language: Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu or Northern Sotho.
Teaching practice is a major part of the degree. In each of the four years you spend a Teaching Experience block in a South African school. To go on placement you must meet attendance and assessment requirements, register provisionally with SACE and hold a valid police clearance certificate.
Graduates can apply for a BEd Honours or a cognate postgraduate diploma. The IIE higher certificates in Early Childhood Care and Education and in Communication Practices can be used to articulate into this degree.
Possible careers
Foundation Phase (Grade R to 3) teacher or tutor, and later school management or education consulting. Further study through a BEd Honours or postgraduate diploma.
Course intelligence for IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching
Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.
Job market outlook
IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.
NSFAS funding
NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like IIE MSA. Ask IIE MSA directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.
Admission chances
IIE MSA’s intake and this course’s requirements with its published admission requirements generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.
These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with IIE MSA and NSFAS.
