About this course
The IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is an ECSA-accredited degree offered only at Ruimsig Johannesburg. It carries 604 credits at NQF Level 8 (SAQA ID 101433, code BEEE0801) with a February intake, and is internationally recognised through ECSA's membership of the Washington Accord.
It aims to help close South Africa's shortage of electrical engineers, and balances theory with hands-on work from first year. A five-year extended curriculum is available for students who meet slightly lower maths and science minimums.
Outline:
- Year 1: mathematics, physics, chemistry, introductory engineering, design graphics and programming
- Year 2: advanced mathematics, electrical theory, electronics, mechanics and fluids
- Year 3: power systems, digital systems, signal processing, telecommunications and embedded systems
- Year 4: control systems, renewable energy, power electronics, and design and research projects
Electives in the senior years include high voltage engineering, electrical machines and data communications. The degree suits students strong in maths and physics who are interested in power, electronics, automation or telecommunications. There is currently no postgraduate electrical engineering at Emeris.
Possible careers
Electrical, electronics, power systems or control systems engineer, maintenance or field service engineer, project engineer or R&D engineer, working towards ECSA registration.
Course intelligence for IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.
Job market outlook
IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.
NSFAS funding
NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like IIE MSA. Ask IIE MSA directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.
Admission chances
IIE MSA’s intake and this course’s requirements with its published admission requirements generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.
These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with IIE MSA and NSFAS.
