About this course

The IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering trains professional engineers who design and build roads, bridges, water systems, buildings and other infrastructure. It is a 566-credit IIE qualification at NQF Level 8 (SAQA ID 118321) from the School of Engineering, Science and Health, taught full-time at the Ruimsig, Durban Westville and Cape Town Newlands campuses with a February intake. The degree is accredited by the CHE and endorsed by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), which links it to the international Washington Accord.

There are two routes:
- the standard 4-year programme
- a 5-year extended curriculum with slightly lower entry marks and more time and support in the early years

Across eight semesters you study engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry and mechanics, then move into geotechnical, structural, water and transportation engineering, rural and urban infrastructure, and civil engineering design at increasing levels. Society and Practice modules place engineering in its social and professional context, and final-year design and research projects bring everything together.

This degree suits learners with strong maths and science who want to solve practical problems that affect communities. Emeris does not currently offer postgraduate civil engineering study, so graduates who want a master's must continue at another university.
