Established in 1922 and tracing its origins back to a mining school founded in Kimberley in 1896, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has grown into one of Africa's most research-intensive universities, regularly placed among the continent's top institutions. Its five faculties -- Commerce, Law and Management; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; Humanities; and Science -- are based on and around the Braamfontein and Parktown precincts in central Johannesburg, putting students close to the country's major financial, legal, industrial and healthcare institutions. The university maintains distinctive research and public-engagement assets, including the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and stewardship of the Sterkfontein Caves in the Cradle of Humankind. Roughly 6 000 first-year undergraduate places are available annually against well over 100 000 applications, so admission is competitive and is generally assessed through Wits' own Admission Points Score, or, for Health Sciences applicants, a composite index blending matric results with National Benchmark Test scores.

Admission Requirements at Wits
Two things decide an offer: your APS, and the specific subjects a programme requires at a minimum level. A high APS does not help if a compulsory subject is missing, so check both on the course page before you apply.
Across the 69 courses listed here, APS requirements run from 34 up to 42. Use the APS tool above to filter the list to what you qualify for right now.
APS requirements at Wits, by band
Of the 69 courses listed here, 40 publish a minimum APS. This is how they spread:
| APS needed | Courses | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| 30 to 34 | 7 | Competitive degrees, often with subject minimums. |
| 35 to 42 | 33 | The most competitive programmes, typically health sciences and engineering. |
29 courses do not publish a numeric APS. Wits may score those differently, so the course page is the authority on what each one needs.
NQF levels offered
Qualifications here sit at 2 different NQF levels. The level tells you what a qualification is worth and what it lets you study next.
