Courses Offered at University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) for 2027
Public universityEstablished in 1922 and tracing its origins back to a mining school founded in Kimberley in 1896, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has grown into one of Africa's most research-intensive universities, regularly placed among the continent's top institutions. Its five faculties -- Commerce, Law and Management; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; Humanities; and Science -- are based on and around the Braamfontein and Parktown precincts in central Johannesburg, putting students close to the country's major financial, legal, industrial and healthcare institutions. The university maintains distinctive research and public-engagement assets, including the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and stewardship of the Sterkfontein Caves in the Cradle of Humankind. Roughly 6 000 first-year undergraduate places are available annually against well over 100 000 applications, so admission is competitive and is generally assessed through Wits' own Admission Points Score, or, for Health Sciences applicants, a composite index blending matric results with National Benchmark Test scores.
