About this course
The BA (General), or Baccalaureus Artium, is a broad humanities degree that lets students build their own mix of subjects. It is an NQF level 7 qualification of 375 to 409 credits, depending on the modules chosen (SAQA ID 123566), taught full-time at the Pretoria campus.
It suits students who are curious about society, culture, ideas and people and who want strong reading, writing and thinking skills before choosing a specialised career.
How it works:
- Year 1: choose six of ten subjects: African Studies, Biblical Archaeology, Philosophy, History, Global Politics, Latin, Media Studies, Politics, Psychology and Visual Culture.
- Year 2: choose six of nine modules, continuing with your preferred subjects.
- Year 3: choose three of seven advanced modules and complete a compulsory Core Integration project that brings together ideas from different subjects.
The degree develops research, argument and communication skills that employers value in many fields. It also prepares students for honours, master's and doctoral study in the humanities.
Students who do not have the NSC requirements can enter with a strong NC(V) Level 4 or a related higher or advanced certificate.
