About this course
The BSc (Computer Science) trains students to design, build and analyse software and data systems. It is an NQF level 7 degree of 400 credits (SAQA ID 118638).
Students choose one of two streams:
- Software Development: system design, programming and software architecture.
- Data Science: mathematics, statistics and advanced algorithms for analysing data. This stream is only offered at the Pretoria campus.
The degree is taught full-time at the Pretoria and Paarl campuses. The 2027 fee document also lists an after-hours option for the software development stream.
Main modules:
- Year 1 (both streams): Mathematics for Programming, Emerging Technologies, Programming Concepts, Introduction to Robotics, Introduction to Cloud Computing, Programming Logic and Design, Concepts in Computer Science and Applied Programming.
- Year 2, Software Development: network-centric computing, computer organisation, data structures and algorithms, advanced programming, databases, automata theory, operating systems and software architecture.
- Year 2, Data Science: calculus and algebra, probability theory, applied mathematics, data analysis, operating systems, machine learning, networks and computer graphics.
- Year 3: a software engineering capstone project and an introduction to cybersecurity.
Students need their own laptop (at least an Intel i5 or i7, 8 GB RAM and a 500 GB drive).
