About this course
The Bachelor of Biblical Studies is BTC's three-year undergraduate degree for people preparing for pastoral and other church ministry. It carries at least 360 credits at NQF Level 7 (SAQA ID 111229) and can be taken through contact classes in Randburg or by distance.
What you study each year:
- Year 1: the Synoptic Gospels and Acts, the Pentateuch, hermeneutics, Christian doctrine, missiology and church planting, youth ministry, apologetics, evangelism and discipleship, homiletics, biblical languages and culture, and theological research methods
- Year 2: the Pauline letters, the Prophets, revelation and the doctrine of God, humanity, sin and Christ, early and later church history, plus New Testament textual analysis or Biblical Greek
- Year 3: the Johannine and General letters, the Writings, salvation, the Holy Spirit and the church, eschatology and theological models, plus Old Testament textual analysis or Biblical Hebrew
Ministry electives are added each semester from the second year. In every year students also complete a Biblical and Church Residency, spending time in a local church so that their studies connect with real ministry.
The degree suits school leavers and adults who sense a call to ministry. Graduates can go on to BTC's Bachelor of Theology Honours, which is the next step towards ministerial recognition in the Baptist Union and many other denominations.
