About Bachelor of Arts in Communication
The BA in Communication (SAQA ID 58335, NQF Level 7) prepares students for work in public relations, corporate communication and the media. It is taught on campus, with some dual-mode delivery in this faculty.
The first two years are shared. Year 1 covers communication theory, academic writing, English, computing, principles of management, psychology and sociology. Year 2 adds research methods and a research project, presentation skills, voice and diction, intercultural communication, marketing, public relations, HR management, information management and work-integrated learning.
In Year 3 you choose one of two concentrations:
- Corporate Communication: business, interpersonal and organisational communication, corporate communication, integrated marketing communication, advertising, web design and group dynamics
- Media Studies: media writing, media criticism, radio and video production, advertising, web design and integrated marketing communication
The degree suits creative people who write well, like working with others and are interested in how organisations and the media shape public opinion. A foundation year is available for learners who need extra preparation before starting.

Course intelligence for Bachelor of Arts in Communication
Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.
Job market outlook
Good sign: Events Manager appears on South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand, a Department of Higher Education and Training analysis of employer hiring activity. Employers have been reporting real recruitment pressure for this role, which generally works in your favour once you’ve completed Bachelor of Arts in Communication.
NSFAS funding
NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like HCHE. Ask HCHE directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.
Admission chances
This course sits in the middle for competitiveness. At an admission score of APS 25+, you have a reasonable chance if you apply in good time, though it’s not a sure thing. Don’t leave your application to the last week.
These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with HCHE and NSFAS.
