About this course
The IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering prepares professional engineers to design and manage power, electronic, control and communication systems. It is a 604-credit IIE qualification at NQF Level 8 (SAQA ID 101433), taught full-time at the Ruimsig campus in Johannesburg by the School of Engineering, Science and Health (the former IIE MSA). It is accredited by the CHE and recognised by ECSA in line with the Washington Accord. A 5-year extended curriculum is also available for students who need more support.
The programme covers:
- Year 1: engineering fundamentals, mathematics, physics, chemistry, design graphics and programming
- Year 2: analogue and digital electronics, calculus, electrical engineering fundamentals, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
- Year 3: advanced electronics, digital systems, power systems, signal processing and telecommunications
- Year 4: control systems, power generation, renewable energy, plus major design and research projects
Laboratory work and projects help you move from theory to working circuits and systems.
The degree suits learners who are very strong in maths and physics and interested in energy, electronics or automation. Emeris does not offer postgraduate engineering, so graduates who want a master's must apply elsewhere.
Possible careers
Graduates work as electrical, electronics, power systems, control systems, maintenance, project and R&D engineers, and can register with ECSA as candidate engineers.
Course intelligence for IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Data-driven planning insights for this specific course: job market outlook, NSFAS funding, and how competitive admission is likely to be.
Job market outlook
IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering doesn’t currently appear on the national scarce-skills list. That’s not a red flag on its own, most jobs in South Africa aren’t on that list, it just tracks where employers reported the strongest hiring pressure. Your own results, experience and network will matter more here than national demand trends.
NSFAS funding
NSFAS does not usually fund students at private institutions like Varsity College. Ask Varsity College directly about its own bursaries or payment plans, and check whether a sector SETA offers funding for this field.
Admission chances
Varsity College’s intake and this course’s requirements with its published admission requirements generally leave more room than the most sought-after courses, so you likely have a reasonable window to apply without rushing, though applying early is always the safer bet.
These insights are estimates generated from South Africa’s National List of Occupations in High Demand (DHET, November 2023 draft), NSFAS’s published funding rules, and this university’s general applicant demand. They’re planning guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm funding and admission specifics directly with Varsity College and NSFAS.
