Courses Offered at Lyceum College (Lyceum) for 2027

Lyceum College is one of South Africa's oldest distance learning providers. It began in 1917 as Lyceum Advancement College, offering correspondence courses, and was renamed Lyceum College (Pty) Ltd in 2003. For more than a hundred years its core business has been helping people, many of them working adults, earn qualifications without attending full-time classes.

Today Lyceum is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private higher education institution (registration number 2001/HE07/011) under the Higher Education Act of 1997. Its programmes are registered on the National Qualifications Framework, with SAQA IDs listed for each qualification. Lyceum belongs to the Educor group. In March 2024 the department deregistered Lyceum and other Educor colleges over compliance failures, but their registration was reinstated in March 2025 subject to strict compliance conditions, so it is sensible to confirm the current status on the DHET register before you enrol.

What Lyceum offers

Qualifications run from NQF Level 5 higher certificates up to NQF Level 8 postgraduate diplomas, grouped in three faculties:
- Commerce: management, operations, project and quality management, office management, public administration and a BCom in Management with accounting and HR streams.
- Humanities: criminal justice, paralegal studies, disaster and safety management, licensing practice, and a full ladder of traffic and metropolitan policing qualifications from higher certificate to postgraduate diploma.
- Education: a Diploma in Grade R Teaching, a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching and two PGCEs (Intermediate Phase, and Senior Phase and FET).

Lyceum is especially well known in the law enforcement and public safety sector. Many traffic officers, metro police officers and licensing officials have studied through it, because the policing and licensing programmes are hard to find elsewhere.

How studying works

All programmes are delivered by distance learning. Study material is supplied digitally through the student portal, and each subject is assessed through assignments and a final exam. You can study at a full-time pace (for example, a three-year diploma in three years) or part-time, taking up to double the minimum time. This flexibility makes Lyceum a practical option for people who work shifts or live far from a campus.

Admission

Entry follows national rules: a higher certificate pass for higher certificates, a diploma pass for diplomas and a bachelor's pass for degrees. The BCom in Management also asks for an APS of 38 and Mathematics at level 5. Lyceum accepts mature age applicants, Recognition of Prior Learning and credit transfer from related qualifications, which helps experienced adults get in and progress. Postgraduate programmes need a relevant degree, advanced diploma or diploma, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management also asks for two years of managerial or professional experience.

Fees and payment

Fees are charged per year or per programme. Under the 2025 fee schedule, most higher certificates cost about R21 500 to R26 000 for the programme, diplomas about R20 500 to R28 000 per year, and degrees about R19 500 to R47 000 per year. You pay a minimum 15% upfront at registration and the balance by monthly debit order, with discounts for paying larger deposits or settling in full. Foreign students pay the full fee upfront. There is no mention of NSFAS funding, so plan for self-funding, a bursary or employer sponsorship.
