Courses Offered at Hugenote Kollege (Hugenote Kollege) for 2027

Hugenote Kollege, known in English as Huguenot College, is a private, non-profit Christian college in Wellington in the Cape Winelands. Its roots go back to the missionary training work started in the town in the 19th century under Dr Andrew Murray. The college in its current form opened in 1951 with courses in Christian social work. From the early 1970s it offered degrees in partnership with Unisa, an arrangement that ended in 2012, and it now runs its own programmes as a registered private higher education institution.

The college's mission is to train leaders who help care for communities and bring about positive change, especially through social services. It teaches in Afrikaans and English, and students can usually write assessments in either language.

Schools

- School of Social Reformation: trains professionals for the social welfare sector. It offers the four-year Bachelor of Social Work, the National Diploma in Early Childhood Development and the FET Certificate in Social Auxiliary Work.
- School of Theology and Ministry: offers the Bachelor of Theology in Missional Ministry by distance learning, along with non-degree programmes for lay ministers in congregations and online courses in biblical Hebrew and Greek.
- School of Social Innovation: offers short executive courses on design thinking, leadership, mentoring and coaching for social enterprises. Social workers can earn CPD points on these courses.

Study modes

The social work, ECD and social auxiliary work programmes are full-time and residential on the Wellington campus, with work-based practical training in welfare organisations, schools and communities. The theology degree and most short courses are studied online through the college's MyNotes learning platform, with live Zoom sessions. Some lay ministry programmes combine online work with contact sessions.

Campus and residence

The campus is at 1 College Street in Wellington, about an hour from Cape Town. It has self-catering residences, and students can buy meals at the campus cafeteria. For 2024, a year in a single room cost about R39 600 for BSW students, and shared rooms were cheaper.

Accreditation

According to its 2024 prospectus, Hugenote Kollege NPC is provisionally registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private higher education institution (certificate 2019/HE08/002), with the registration then running to 31 December 2025. Its occupational programmes are accredited through the relevant SETAs. Prospective students should ask the college to confirm its current registration status.

Fees

For 2024, first-year BSW tuition was R50 600 and the one-year Social Auxiliary Work certificate cost R31 300. Theology is charged per module (R6 360 per module in 2024). Tuition is paid at or before registration, and instalment options exist for some programmes.

How to apply

Apply online through the college's application portal at no cost. Applications made by email, post or in person carry a R350 fee. Admission requirements depend on the programme. For example, the BSW needs an NSC with at least 60% for English, while the Social Auxiliary Work certificate accepts learners with Grade 10.
