Courses Offered at Akademia (Akademia) for 2027

Akademia is a private higher education institution that teaches only in Afrikaans. It describes itself as Christian, classical in its approach to learning, and independent of the state. It was set up by the Solidarity Movement to give Afrikaans-speaking students a university-style option in their home language. Akademia was registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training in 2011 (registration number 2011/HE08/005), and its first 40 students started classes in March 2012 in four programmes. By 2022 it had close to 2 500 students and it now offers about 30 qualifications.

Faculties

Akademia's programmes sit in five faculties:

- Economic and Management Sciences: BCom degrees in accounting, management accounting, economics, financial planning and business management, plus higher certificates, an advanced diploma, postgraduate diplomas and an honours degree.
- Natural Sciences: BSc degrees in computer science and mathematical sciences.
- Humanities: BA degrees in general studies, communication and journalism, and language studies, a BSocSci in politics, philosophy and economics, and honours degrees in philosophy and in media and communication.
- Education: BEd degrees for the foundation and intermediate phases, a postgraduate teaching certificate, a BEdHons and a postgraduate diploma in school leadership.
- Law: the LLB, a higher certificate in labour law and an LLM by research.

Study modes and campuses

There are two main ways to study. The full-time campus model has classes during the day at the Pretoria campuses in Centurion (Gerhard Street in Die Hoewes and the Leriba site in Clubview) and at the Paarl campus in the Western Cape, which the website notes is provisionally approved. The after-hours distance model is meant for working people. It combines online learning with support from learning centres in Centurion, Pretoria (Moot), Paarl, Bloemfontein, George and Somerset West. A few programmes, such as the Advanced Diploma in Project Management and the LLM, are offered as e-learning only.

Akademia is building a large new campus at Mooiplaats, east of Pretoria, with the first construction phase starting in November 2025.

Recognition

Several degrees are recognised by professional bodies. For example, the accounting degrees give exemptions or routes with CIMA, SAIPA, CIBA and ACCA, the BCom (Financial Planning) is recognised by the Financial Planning Institute, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Taxation is endorsed by the South African Institute of Tax.

Fees and funding

Fees are charged per module and depend on the model you choose. The after-hours model usually costs about R8 000 a year less than the full-time campus model. For 2027, a first year of BCom (Accounting) costs R79 145 on campus or R71 145 after hours, and an R8 000 registration fee is paid each year for campus study. Fees can be paid upfront or in ten monthly instalments from February to November, and at least half the annual fee must be paid by 30 June. Merit bursaries of up to R50 000 are available to strong matriculants.

How to apply

Applications for 2027 opened on 1 April 2026 and are made online. Most programmes close on 29 January 2027. Honours programmes close on 8 January 2027, and the Postgraduate Teaching Certificate closes on 20 November 2026 for full-time study and 18 December 2026 for part-time study. Degree applicants need an NSC with a bachelor's pass and usually at least 50% in Afrikaans. Higher certificates need a higher certificate or diploma pass. The website has a calculator to check your admission point score.
